What is ... Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
You may be considering CBT because you’re feeling stuck in anxious or negative thought patterns, overwhelmed by worry, or caught in behaviours that no longer serve you. Perhaps your mind feels constantly busy, self-critical, or on edge, and you’re longing for practical ways to feel calmer, more in control, and more confident in everyday life.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based approach that focuses on the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It helps us understand how unhelpful thinking patterns and coping strategies can keep us trapped in cycles of anxiety, low mood, addiction, or low self-esteem — even when we desperately want things to change.
In CBT, we gently explore the thoughts you have about yourself, others, and the world, noticing how these shape your emotional responses and actions. Together, we work to identify patterns that may be increasing distress, and develop more balanced, compassionate ways of thinking and responding.
CBT is often described as a "here and now" therapy, offering practical tools you can use both in and outside sessions. This might include learning how to challenge harsh inner dialogue, manage anxiety symptoms, reduce avoidance, or respond differently to triggers that feel overwhelming.
Using CBT in a Trauma-Informed Way
While CBT can be highly effective, I use it thoughtfully and sensitively — especially where trauma, addiction, or long-standing relational wounds are involved. We move at your pace, ensuring techniques feel supportive rather than overwhelming, and that your experiences are always understood within the wider context of your life and history.
CBT can help you to:
- Reduce anxiety, panic, and overthinking
- Manage low mood and self-critical thinking
- Develop healthier coping strategies
- Break unhelpful behavioural patterns
- Build confidence and emotional resilience
For some clients, CBT is the main focus of therapy. For others, it is blended with deeper relational or trauma-focused work, creating a balanced approach that supports both insight and change.
My aim is to offer a collaborative, empowering space where CBT becomes a set of tools you can take with you — helping you feel more grounded, capable, and able to respond to life with greater clarity and self-compassion.
