I was generous, thoughtful, reliable. I was the one who made the effort, remembered things, showed up, and took care of people.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"702\" data-end=\"787\">Underneath, though, I didn\u2019t believe that being <em data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"754\">me<\/em> was enough to keep people close.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"824\"><strong>When Over-Giving Felt Like Love<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"1037\">I remember when I got my first flat. I was proud of it \u2014 and also anxious. Almost straight away, I started inviting a particular friend over for dinner every single week. I cooked, hosted, made an evening of it<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"1037\">But I did notice at the time was that I was <strong data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1109\">never invited back<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1112\" data-end=\"1192\">Still, week after week, I made the effort. Week after week, nothing came the other way.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1258\">I told myself I was just being kind. Easygoing. Low-maintenance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1260\" data-end=\"1289\">But slowly, resentment built.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1405\">Eventually, I snapped. I listed all the times I\u2019d invited her, all the effort I\u2019d made, all the ways I\u2019d shown up.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1465\">And she said something that, at the time, made me furious:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1467\" data-end=\"1494\">\n<p data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1494\">\u201cBut you didn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1559\">Back then, I couldn\u2019t hear it. I felt unseen and unappreciated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1652\">Now, with distance \u2014 and a lot of therapeutic understanding \u2014 I can see that she was right.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1746\">I <em data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1664\">didn\u2019t<\/em> have to.<br data-start=\"1673\" data-end=\"1676\" \/>I chose to.<br data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1690\" \/>And I never set any <a href=\"https:\/\/thehealingnest.co.uk\/blog\/setting-boundaries-without-guilt-a-guide-for-recovering-codependents\/\">boundaries<\/a> around what I was giving.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1748\" data-end=\"1805\"><strong>Taking Care of Friends Instead of Trusting Connection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1837\">This wasn\u2019t a one-off pattern.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1839\" data-end=\"2029\">For years, I felt a quiet, persistent sense that I had to <em data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1903\">earn<\/em> my place in friendships. I took care of people. I treated them. I bought things. I organised. I gave more than was asked for.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2031\" data-end=\"2125\">It was as though I didn\u2019t trust that simply being present, honest, and myself would be enough.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2127\" data-end=\"2239\">That belief \u2014 <em data-start=\"2141\" data-end=\"2178\">\u201cI\u2019m not enough unless I give more\u201d<\/em> \u2014 sits at the heart of many codependent friendship patterns.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2241\" data-end=\"2299\">And it\u2019s something I now see regularly in my therapy work.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2344\"><strong>How Codependency Shows Up in Friendships<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2346\" data-end=\"2506\">When people think about codependency, they usually think about romantic relationships. But for many women, friendships are where this pattern quietly plays out.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2508\" data-end=\"2554\">Codependent friendship dynamics often include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2555\" data-end=\"2826\">\n<li data-start=\"2555\" data-end=\"2597\">\n<p data-start=\"2557\" data-end=\"2597\">Over-giving time, energy, or resources<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2598\" data-end=\"2639\">\n<p data-start=\"2600\" data-end=\"2639\">Avoiding conflict by not naming needs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2706\">\n<p data-start=\"2642\" data-end=\"2706\">Feeling responsible for the emotional tone of the relationship<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2707\" data-end=\"2762\">\n<p data-start=\"2709\" data-end=\"2762\">Struggling to tolerate imbalance without self-blame<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2763\" data-end=\"2826\">\n<p data-start=\"2765\" data-end=\"2826\">Building closeness through usefulness rather than mutuality<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2828\" data-end=\"2882\">What\u2019s often missing isn\u2019t care \u2014 it\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2867\" data-end=\"2881\">boundaries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2884\" data-end=\"2944\"><strong>When There Are No Boundaries, Resentment Does the Talking<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2946\" data-end=\"3030\">Without boundaries in friendships, giving becomes automatic rather than intentional.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3032\" data-end=\"3046\">You don\u2019t ask:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3047\" data-end=\"3217\">\n<li data-start=\"3047\" data-end=\"3085\">\n<p data-start=\"3049\" data-end=\"3085\"><em data-start=\"3049\" data-end=\"3083\">Do I have the capacity for this?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3086\" data-end=\"3148\">\n<p data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3148\"><em data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3146\">Is this something I want to give, or feel I should give?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3149\" data-end=\"3217\">\n<p data-start=\"3151\" data-end=\"3217\"><em data-start=\"3151\" data-end=\"3215\">Is the effort in this friendship broadly reciprocal over time?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3219\" data-end=\"3288\">Instead, you push past your own limits \u2014 and tell yourself it\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3290\" data-end=\"3305\">Until it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3307\" data-end=\"3548\">Resentment isn\u2019t a sign that you\u2019re unkind or demanding. From a therapeutic perspective, resentment is often a <strong data-start=\"3418\" data-end=\"3437\">boundary signal<\/strong> \u2014 information that something has been given at a personal cost that hasn\u2019t been acknowledged or chosen freely.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3550\" data-end=\"3666\">In friendships without clear boundaries, expectations stay unspoken. And unspoken expectations are where pain grows.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3668\" data-end=\"3719\"><strong>Why \u201cThey Didn\u2019t Ask You To\u201d Can Feel So Painful<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3721\" data-end=\"3871\">One of the hardest moments for people with codependent patterns is realising that the other person didn\u2019t <em data-start=\"3827\" data-end=\"3832\">ask<\/em> for the level of giving they received.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3873\" data-end=\"3931\">That realisation can feel invalidating \u2014 even humiliating.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3933\" data-end=\"3978\">But clinically, it\u2019s often the turning point.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3980\" data-end=\"4124\">Because it shifts the focus away from <em data-start=\"4018\" data-end=\"4051\">\u201cWhy don\u2019t they appreciate me?\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"4051\" data-end=\"4054\" \/>and towards<br data-start=\"4065\" data-end=\"4068\" \/><em data-start=\"4068\" data-end=\"4124\">\u201cWhy did I feel I had to give this much to be valued?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4126\" data-end=\"4238\">That\u2019s not a criticism. It\u2019s an invitation to build <strong data-start=\"4178\" data-end=\"4237\">boundaries that protect connection rather than erode it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4240\" data-end=\"4310\"><strong>Healthy Friendships Are Built With Boundaries, Not <a href=\"https:\/\/thehealingnest.co.uk\/blog\/what-does-self-abandonment-mean\/\">Self-Abandonment<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4312\" data-end=\"4388\">Boundaries in friendships don\u2019t make you distant, selfish, or transactional.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4390\" data-end=\"4404\">They help you:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4405\" data-end=\"4622\">\n<li data-start=\"4405\" data-end=\"4441\">\n<p data-start=\"4407\" data-end=\"4441\">Give from choice, not obligation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4442\" data-end=\"4483\">\n<p data-start=\"4444\" data-end=\"4483\">Let effort be more balanced over time<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4484\" data-end=\"4527\">\n<p data-start=\"4486\" data-end=\"4527\">Say no without guilt or over-explaining<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4528\" data-end=\"4582\">\n<p data-start=\"4530\" data-end=\"4582\">Allow others to take responsibility for themselves<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4583\" data-end=\"4622\">\n<p data-start=\"4585\" data-end=\"4622\">Stay connected without disappearing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4624\" data-end=\"4739\">When boundaries are present, generosity becomes sustainable \u2014 and friendships feel safer, clearer, and more mutual.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4741\" data-end=\"4790\"><strong>Signs You May Be Over-Doing It in a Friendship<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4792\" data-end=\"4835\">You might recognise some of these patterns:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4837\" data-end=\"5396\">\n<li data-start=\"4837\" data-end=\"4916\">\n<p data-start=\"4839\" data-end=\"4916\">You regularly give more time, effort, or emotional support than you receive<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4917\" data-end=\"4989\">\n<p data-start=\"4919\" data-end=\"4989\">You say yes automatically, then feel drained or resentful afterwards<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4990\" data-end=\"5069\">\n<p data-start=\"4992\" data-end=\"5069\">You struggle to express needs and hope the other person will notice instead<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5070\" data-end=\"5125\">\n<p data-start=\"5072\" data-end=\"5125\">You feel responsible for maintaining the friendship<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5126\" data-end=\"5180\">\n<p data-start=\"5128\" data-end=\"5180\">You minimise your disappointment to avoid conflict<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5181\" data-end=\"5249\">\n<p data-start=\"5183\" data-end=\"5249\">You feel anxious about pulling back in case the friendship fades<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5250\" data-end=\"5309\">\n<p data-start=\"5252\" data-end=\"5309\">You equate closeness with effort, fixing, or caretaking<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5310\" data-end=\"5396\">\n<p data-start=\"5312\" data-end=\"5396\">You notice resentment building but aren\u2019t sure how to set boundaries without guilt<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5398\" data-end=\"5461\">If this resonates, it doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re \u201cbad at friendships\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5463\" data-end=\"5602\">It often means you learned \u2014 somewhere along the way \u2014 that connection had to be earned through effort rather than supported by boundaries.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"5604\" data-end=\"5648\"><strong>You Don\u2019t Have to Earn Your Place Anymore<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5650\" data-end=\"5751\">Learning to step out of codependent friendship patterns isn\u2019t about doing less because you care less.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5753\" data-end=\"5841\">It\u2019s about doing less <strong data-start=\"5775\" data-end=\"5840\">because you\u2019re finally including yourself in the relationship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5843\" data-end=\"5966\">With boundaries in place, friendships can become something different:<br \/>\nNot exhausting.<br \/>\nNot one-sided.<br \/>\nNot quietly resentful.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5968\" data-end=\"5997\">Just human, mutual, and real.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5968\" data-end=\"5997\"><strong>A Gentle Reflection Exercise: Checking Your Boundaries in Friendships<\/strong><br \/>\nYou might want to take a few quiet minutes with these questions \u2014 journalling if that feels helpful, or simply reflecting.<br \/>\nWhere do I tend to over-give in friendships?<br \/>\nNotice patterns rather than judging yourself. Is it time, emotional support, money, organising, caretaking, or availability?<br \/>\nWhat do I hope will happen when I give this much?<br \/>\nFor example: feeling valued, included, secure, appreciated, or less likely to be left.<br \/>\nWhat would a small boundary look like here?<br \/>\nNot a dramatic withdrawal \u2014 just one gentle limit. Saying no once. Not rescuing. Waiting to see if effort is reciprocated.<br \/>\nWhat feelings come up when I imagine doing less?<br \/>\nGuilt, anxiety, fear of rejection, relief? These feelings often tell you more than the situation itself.<br \/>\nIf I trusted that I didn\u2019t have to earn connection, what might change?<br \/>\nThis question often points towards the deeper work around <a href=\"https:\/\/thehealingnest.co.uk\/blog\/why-self-worth-is-life-changing-and-how-it-can-transform-your-life\/\">self-worth<\/a> and boundaries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5968\" data-end=\"5997\">\nThere\u2019s no \u201cright\u201d answer to these questions. The aim isn\u2019t to fix anything immediately \u2014 it\u2019s to begin noticing where your needs and boundaries may have been quietly left out of the relationship.<br \/>\nLearning to build boundaries in friendships is a process.
