It felt like a massive overstatement — almost offensive in its simplicity. Life, surely, was more complicated than that.

But over the years, through training, lived experience, and sitting with countless stories in the therapy room, that statement has stayed with me. And slowly, uncomfortably, it began to feel less exaggerated and more painfully accurate.
The more I learned about trauma, the more I could see how deeply it had shaped my own life and relationships.

I can see now that I would have brought up my daughters differently if I’d had a clearer understanding of trauma and nervous system responses earlier on. Not because I didn’t love them — but because trauma narrows perspective. It limits our capacity to pause, reflect, and respond. We parent, often unknowingly, from survival rather than safety.
I can also see how trauma has shaped my extended family relationships. Toxic family dynamics don’t appear out of nowhere. When trauma is unacknowledged, people protect themselves through control, criticism, emotional withdrawal, or aggression. If trauma hadn’t been present — or had been better understood — some family members may not have become so toxic, and I suspect many of us, myself included, could have been more forgiving, more spacious, and less reactive with one another.

trauma.alt

Trauma hardens people. It makes softness feel dangerous.

I also have to acknowledge that I wasn’t always a good friend. Through my own trauma responses — emotional intensity, chaos, poor boundaries, and crisis-driven relating — I could be exhausting to be around. I lost people not because they didn’t care, but because they were worn down by the drama that trauma can create when it’s unrecognised and unsupported.
I also attracted toxic ‘friends’, chose abusive partners and, without fully understanding why, brought those relationships into my family system. That choice didn’t just affect me — it affected my daughters too. Trauma doesn’t stay contained within one person; it ripples outward, touching the people we love most. Some relationships didn’t survive that, and again, not out of cruelty, but out of self-protection.

None of this is written from a place of shame or self-attack. It’s written from understanding. Trauma doesn’t make us bad people — it makes us adapted people. We do what we can to survive with the tools we have at the time.
And this is why trauma awareness matters so deeply.

What Is Trauma?
Trauma is not just about what happened to us — it’s about how our nervous system responded and whether we had the support needed to process the experience.
Two people can go through the same event and be affected very differently. Trauma occurs when something overwhelms our capacity to cope, leaving us feeling unsafe, powerless, or disconnected — either in the moment or long after the event has passed.
Common sources of trauma include:
Childhood emotional neglect or inconsistency
Addiction within the family
Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
Domestic abuse or coercive control
Sudden loss, grief, or abandonment
Growing up in chronic stress or instability

Many people dismiss their trauma because they believe it “wasn’t bad enough.” But trauma isn’t measured by severity — it’s measured by impact.

How Trauma Shows Up in Adult Life
Unresolved trauma doesn’t disappear with time. Instead, it often shows up in patterns such as:
Anxiety, panic, or emotional numbness
Difficulties in relationships or fear of closeness
Codependency and people-pleasing
Addiction or compulsive behaviours
Choosing abusive or emotionally unavailable partners
Shame, self-blame, and chronic self-criticism

Many people come to therapy believing they are the problem, when in reality their nervous system learned strategies that once kept them safe.

Trauma, Relationships, and Repetition
Trauma is relational, and it often repeats itself through relationships until it’s understood.
Without awareness, we can:
Recreate familiar dynamics from childhood
Confuse intensity with connection
Struggle with boundaries
Stay in harmful relationships longer than we should
Trauma-informed therapy helps shift the question from “Why do I keep doing this?” to “What is my nervous system trying to protect me from?”

Trauma Therapy: Moving From Survival to Choice
Healing trauma isn’t about blaming families or reliving the past. It’s about helping your nervous system feel safe enough to respond differently in the present.
Trauma-informed therapy focuses on:
Regulation and stabilisation
Understanding trauma responses
Building self-compassion and agency
Creating healthier relationship patterns
Healing doesn’t mean the past didn’t matter — it means it no longer controls your present.
You Are Not Broken — You Are Adapted
If trauma truly didn’t exist, many of our social systems might look very different. But trauma does exist, and it quietly shapes lives, families, and generations.
The most important thing to know is this:
Your responses make sense in the context of your experiences.
And with support, understanding, and compassion, those responses can change.
Trauma Therapy in Romford
If you’re based in Romford, or the wider Havering area and are struggling with the effects of trauma, addiction, or difficult relationship patterns, you don’t have to face it alone.
I offer trauma-informed therapy in a calm, supportive space, working at your pace.
Get in touch here to book a session,

Andrea, x

My introduction to trauma came through a book that made a bold claim: If trauma didn’t exist, we wouldn’t need prisons, social services, or many of the systems we rely on to manage human suffering.
