But sometimes, feeling sorry for someone can become tangled up with romantic or emotional attachment. Many people don\u2019t realise they\u2019re confusing <em data-start=\"910\" data-end=\"916\">pity<\/em> with <em data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"928\">love<\/em> until they\u2019re already deeply entrenched in a painful dynamic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1166\">In my therapy work in Romford, this is one of the most common patterns I see in relationships touched by trauma and codependency.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1190\">So why does it happen?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1246\">Let\u2019s explore the reasons with compassion and clarity.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1248\" data-end=\"1251\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1253\" data-end=\"1333\"><strong data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1333\">1. They feel loved when they are needed \u2014 and they feel needed when someone is struggling.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2047\" data-end=\"2080\">This creates a powerful illusion:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2081\" data-end=\"2167\">\n<li data-start=\"2081\" data-end=\"2122\">\n<p data-start=\"2083\" data-end=\"2122\"><em data-start=\"2083\" data-end=\"2120\">\u201cI\u2019m helping them, so we\u2019re close.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2123\" data-end=\"2167\">\n<p data-start=\"2125\" data-end=\"2167\"><em data-start=\"2125\" data-end=\"2167\">\u201cThey rely on me, so they must love me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2169\" data-end=\"2221\">But this is caregiving, not a balanced relationship.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2390\"><strong data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2264\">If you support someone with addiction<\/strong>, this dynamic can be especially strong, because crises create intensity \u2014 and intensity often feels like emotional closeness.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2395\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2397\" data-end=\"2456\"><strong data-start=\"2400\" data-end=\"2456\">3. It\u2019s survival chemistry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2793\" data-end=\"2796\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2798\" data-end=\"2864\"><strong data-start=\"2801\" data-end=\"2864\">4. Vulnerability is powerful.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2975\" data-end=\"3121\">But vulnerability \u2260 compatibility.<br data-start=\"3009\" data-end=\"3012\" \/>You can feel deeply connected to someone\u2019s <em data-start=\"3055\" data-end=\"3063\">wounds<\/em> without sharing values, goals, or emotional availability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3123\" data-end=\"3228\">This is how many people become attached to partners they can\u2019t actually build healthy relationships with.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3230\" data-end=\"3233\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3286\"><strong data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3286\">5. Low Self-Worth Creates \u201cRescue Fantasies\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3287\" data-end=\"3464\">People who feel unlovable often believe they have to earn affection by saving someone else. When someone expresses gratitude or leans on them emotionally, it can feel like love.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3466\" data-end=\"3501\">But what they\u2019re really feeling is:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3502\" data-end=\"3580\">\n<li data-start=\"3502\" data-end=\"3517\">\n<p data-start=\"3504\" data-end=\"3517\">validation,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3518\" data-end=\"3530\">\n<p data-start=\"3520\" data-end=\"3530\">purpose,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3531\" data-end=\"3580\">\n<p data-start=\"3533\" data-end=\"3580\">and temporary relief from their own insecurity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3582\" data-end=\"3591\">Not love.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3593\" data-end=\"3596\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3598\" data-end=\"3645\"><strong data-start=\"3601\" data-end=\"3645\">6. We\u2019re Taught to Romanticise Suffering<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3646\" data-end=\"3690\">Films, TV, and novels often portray love as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3691\" data-end=\"3820\">\n<li data-start=\"3691\" data-end=\"3730\">\n<p data-start=\"3693\" data-end=\"3730\">rescuing someone from their trauma,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3731\" data-end=\"3764\">\n<p data-start=\"3733\" data-end=\"3764\">fixing someone who is broken,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3765\" data-end=\"3820\">\n<p data-start=\"3767\" data-end=\"3820\">or loving someone \u201cno matter how much they hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3822\" data-end=\"3890\">These narratives shape how people interpret their own relationships.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3892\" data-end=\"3942\">But <em data-start=\"3896\" data-end=\"3904\">rescue<\/em> is not romance \u2014 and pity isn\u2019t love.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3944\" data-end=\"3947\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3949\" data-end=\"4010\"><strong data-start=\"3952\" data-end=\"4010\">7. Feeling Sorry for Someone Can Feel Emotionally Safe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4011\" data-end=\"4101\">Sometimes it\u2019s easier to \u201clove\u201d someone you feel sorry for. It creates a sense of control:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4102\" data-end=\"4191\">\n<li data-start=\"4102\" data-end=\"4125\">\n<p data-start=\"4104\" data-end=\"4125\">You know your role.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4126\" data-end=\"4146\">\n<p data-start=\"4128\" data-end=\"4146\">You feel needed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4147\" data-end=\"4191\">\n<p data-start=\"4149\" data-end=\"4191\">You don\u2019t have to risk real vulnerability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4193\" data-end=\"4251\">But this isn\u2019t emotional intimacy \u2014 it\u2019s emotional safety.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4253\" data-end=\"4256\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"4258\" data-end=\"4309\"><strong data-start=\"4261\" data-end=\"4309\">8. They Haven\u2019t Experienced Healthy Love Yet<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4310\" data-end=\"4503\">When someone\u2019s relationship history includes addiction, trauma, or inconsistent affection, their internal \u201clove map\u201d becomes distorted. They may genuinely not know what healthy love feels like.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4505\" data-end=\"4602\">Sympathy, care, or comfort may be the closest thing they\u2019ve known \u2014 so they interpret it as love.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4604\" data-end=\"4607\" \/>\n<h1 data-start=\"4609\" data-end=\"4663\"><strong data-start=\"4611\" data-end=\"4663\">How to Tell the Difference Between Pity and Love<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"4664\" data-end=\"4709\">Here are some gentle questions to reflect on:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4711\" data-end=\"4840\"><strong data-start=\"4711\" data-end=\"4792\">Does the connection grow during calm, stable moments \u2014 or only during crisis?<\/strong><br data-start=\"4792\" data-end=\"4795\" \/>Love grows in stability.
